If
you will be completing FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid in
January, you must apply for a PIN number, (both parents and students). This
Personal Identification Number serves as your electronic signature and
provides access to your personal information in various U.S. Department of
Education systems. You can apply at Federal Student Aid’s PIN Web site, www.pin.ed.gov, by selecting “Apply for a PIN”. Once you successfully complete a request, they will e-mail or mail you a PIN, depending on whether you and your parents provided them with an e-mail address. It will take approximately 1-3 business days after you request your PIN for you to receive an e-mail notification with instructions on how to retrieve it electronically, or 7-10 days to receive it in the mail via the U.S. Postal Service. NEWS
FROM THE NURSE We
want to assure you that we are taking steps to prevent the spread of flu at
our school. The Novel H1N1 flu virus is common in communities across the state
and nation. You might know this virus as the “swine flu.” We are seeing
students with flu-like symptoms in our school and it is reasonable to assume
that some may have swine flu. We are working closely with South Carolina
Department of Health & Environmental Control and are following their
recommendations. We ask that you watch your child closely for flu symptoms
such as a fever of 100 degrees or higher along with a cough or sore throat. If
your child develops these symptoms you will need to keep your child at home
until the fever is gone for 24 hours, without the use of medicines to reduce
the fever. Be sure to call the school to report that your child is home sick
with flu symptoms. There is no way to completely stop the flu, but together we
can help make its impact on our school less severe. H1N1 vaccinations have begun for the elementary schools. The
vaccinations will start being administered in the next two weeks at MCHS. In
the meantime, please follow these suggestions to prevent the spread of the
flu.
WAYS
TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF FLU
FREQUENT
HAND WASHING-------wash
hands at least 20 seconds preferably with soap and water (if you sing the
Happy Birthday song, it will be about 20 seconds), if soap and water are not
available, use an alcohol based waterless cleanser. COUGH
AND SNEEZE INTO YOUR SLEEVE OR A TISSUE-----------if you use a tissue, throw it away and
wash your hands afterwards IF
POSSIBLE, STAY AT LEAST 6 FEET AWAY FROM ANYONE WITH A RESPIRATORY INFECTION---------the
flu (influenza) is spread by coughing and sneezing STAY
AT HOME IF YOU ARE SICK-------flu symptoms include fever (100 or more oral) accompanied by sore
throat and cough. You should be fever free (without fever reducing
medications) for 24 hours before returning to work or school PRACTICE
A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE--------get enough sleep and eat healthy GET
FLU SHOTS WHEN AVAILABLE SCHOOL
FEES Please be reminded that if you have not yet paid your school fees, do so as soon as possible. Seniors who owe fees need to get a jump-start on this. If you have a question about whether or not you still owe fees, please contact Ms. Tammy Wilson, (803) 364-2134 or (803) 364-3121. YEARBOOKS Don’t forget to purchase your yearbooks. The current price is $55, but the price will increase in January. Optional yearbook items such as stamped wording, personalization icons, autograph pages, and plastic covers can be purchased for an additional cost. JOB SHADOWINGTake your
child to work!! MCHS students can job shadow three times during the
school year. Two of those times are for half days and the other is for a
full day on or around Ground Hog Day. Interested students are to fill
out necessary paperwork and have it signed by the job supervisor, parent, and
an administrator. Forms can be obtained from Mrs. Hallman in room 609.
For more information, please contact Mrs. Hallman at 364-2134.
INTERIM
REPORTS Interim reports for the second nine weeks will be distributed on Tuesday, November 24. SERVICE
LEARNING Service
Learning Logs are due January 8. Portfolios
are also due on January 8. HOLIDAY ACTIVITIESThe
months of November and December are very busy on MCHS’s campus. Seniors are
making applications to colleges, exams are right around the corner, the first
semester will soon be over, and the time for Season of Sharing in Newberry
County has begun. The
Season of Sharing program is somewhat of a tradition for the student body at
Mid-Carolina. Cans and nonperishable goods are collected throughout the month
of November and donated to Manna House to help less fortunate families in
Newberry County. Clean
out your pantries! This years
Season of Sharing began on November 4 and will end on November 17.
Bring in any type of non-perishable food to donate to the Manna House.
This could include fruit, vegetables, box dinners, toilet paper, peanut
butter, or soap. The winning 1A
class will receive the Top Turkey Award! The
Season of Sharing has been very successful in the past and we anticipate the
helpful and enthusiastic participation of the feeder elementary schools this
year. MCHS
also participates in the annual Angel Tree. During lunch students can chose a
name of a less fortunate child from the Christmas tree. These gifts are to be
wrapped and returned to Mrs. Hallman by Friday, December 4. The
Season of Sharing assembly is held at Mid-Carolina High during the school day,
and representatives from each of the feeder elementary schools participate in
the assembly. They are rewarded
and noted for their hard work. This
year’s assembly will be held on Tuesday, December 8. All are invited
to attend. Important Dates: November
