Summer Reading Tips for Parents & Students

Choosing a Book Completing the Assignment
  • Use the summer reading lists as guidelines for book choices.

  • Parents should take an active role in helping to choose a book; read reviews carefully to make an appropriate choice for your student's ability and maturity level.

  • Talk with the school media specialist, your English teacher, or local librarians for other suggestions.

  • FIND A BOOK THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN!!!

  • Check out the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award Nominees and past winners for possible choices.

  • Check out current young adult best sellers at your local bookstore.

  • Summer Reading Checklists

*You may choose from the following lists of assignments.

Journal Entries

There are at least 20 entries in the summer reading project.

Each entry is at least 75 words each.

Entries contain reactions to the reading only with no plot summary.

Book Review

Review is in essay format of at least 1000 words.

Review shows full knowledge of work, acknowledges details, background information, and context of the work.

Review discusses repeated elements that are necessary for appreciation of the work.

Review explains the overall theme of the piece and divides review into ideas that connect to the subject/theme in a meaningful way.

Review addresses the strong and weak aspects of the piece and discusses how these affect the overall effectiveness or enjoyment of the work.

Review includes any special features and uses specific details and/or quotations. 

  Character Diary

Diary has at least 20 entries.

Diary’s entries are at least 75 words each.

The entries are told from the perspective of one of the characters.

The entries contain information that gives the reader insight into the conflict and plot of the story.

Newspaper

The newspaper has a three-page layout completed from a Microsoft Publisher template or other program of equal integrity.

The newspaper has stories that pertain to the characters, plot, and themes.

The newspaper has a creative style that compliments the novel.

The newspaper contains novel-relevant pictures and/or graphics with captions.
