Local Students Win Statewide HOSA Healthcare Competition

Newberry, SC - March 19, 2010 - Vanessa Harclerode a student at Newberry County Career Center in the Health Science Program, has won first place in the Medical Photography competitive event at the 32nd Annual South Carolina Health Occupations Students of America (SC HOSA) State Leadership Conference. Harclerod competed against other secondary and postsecondary students studying healthcare careers from across South Carolina, Kayla Snelgrove was awarded the Barbara James Service Award Silver Medal for volunteering over 180 hours of community service at the White Oak Nursing Center and Hospice of SC. Both students were recognized at the closing awards ceremony at the SC HOSA State Leadership Conference March 12 in Charleston, SC.

SC HOSA is a non-profit student-led association of future healthcare professionals. It is one of only 10 career and technical student organizations by the U.S. Department of Education. Its mission is critical for South Carolina students considering the shortage of qualified workers for healthcare jobs. SC HOSA's annual conference takes place in March each year and provides students with the chance to network with others in healthcare and learn during educational symposiums and exhibits.

"Building passion for the healthcare industry among our state's youth is one of the top priorities of HOSA," says Nancy Allen of the SC Department of Education, who is also a SC HOSA advisor. "Students who compete in HOSA's annual competitive events program demonstrate they are constantly improving themselves to be at the top of the field." To learn more about SC HOSA visit www.schosa.org.
