Mrs. Carol Dukes

One of the ways we celebrate diversity at Newberry Elementary School is through our ESOL classes.  ESOL stands for English to Speakers of Other Languages.  I am Carol Dukes, the ESOL teacher at NES for students in grades K – 5.  Our job in the District is “to provide equal educational opportunities to students who have a primary or home language other than English…our primary focus is to provide an English-rich environment so those students will become proficient as soon as possible”.  Our District “strives to create a learning environment that encourages student pride in their cultural heritage…{ESOL} will provide each non-English or limited English speaking child the opportunity to be successful in academic areas and to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency in order to be successfully mainstreamed into all classes” (from District Mission Statement, ESOL Program Goals and Objectives, ESOL Handbook 2008-09, page 3).
