AAA LEVEL SYSTEM

Newberry Alternative School (NAS) Level System is a school wide intervention system designed to assist and prepare students to return to their home school. In order to be recommended for return to their home school the student must attend NAS for the amount of time stipulated in their contract and must have accomplished the following:

Attendance - Shall be in accordance with Newberry district policy and the Newberry Alternative School AAA Policy. No unexcused absences for the week.

Attitude - Must meet requirements of their contract, no major discipline infractions and they must be on Level 3 of their contract.

Academic Achievement - Students must satisfactorily complete the academic criteria for all assigned classes. Students must show an increase in academic skills in each class assigned while at NAS.

Criteria and Privileges for Level System:

Level 1: Students entering NAS will begin on level 1. They will stay on level 1 for the first three weeks at NAS. Students will progress to level 2 when they achieve at least 60 points. There are no privileges on level 1.

Level 2: Students completing their initial three weeks at Level 1 and maintaining more than 60 points will move to level 2. Level 2 students will be allowed level 2 privileges. Students on level 2 who drop below 60 points will be returned to level 1 for two weeks or until their points return to the specified rating of 60 or above. Students will remain at this level for three weeks. Level 2 students will progress to level 3 when they achieve at least 90 or more points based on the AAA system.

Level 3: Students who obtain at least 90 points will move to level 3. Level 3 students will be allowed to participate in the "open lunch" program, which allows them to be seated at the VIP tables. Students will remain at this level for at least three weeks, plus duration of contract, before transitioning back to their home school.

Students on level 3 who drop below 90 points will be returned to level 2 for two weeks or until their points reach the specified rating of 90 points or above.

Transition Meeting: Students who progress through each level and reach 90 points or more will qualify to schedule a transition meeting with their home school if contract says so. The members of the transition team will include a representative from the student's home school, a parent or guardian and a representative from NAS. Level 3 Students will be allowed all the privileges addressed above. Parents will be notified of their child's progress.

Semester 2

When Semester 2 starts all students will start over on Level 1 with 30 points no matter what level they were on or how many points they had previously.

The following are modifications to the level system:

Adjustment 1 . Parents will be notified when a student has been on Level 1 for 6 consecutive weeks and is not satisfactorily performing to the terms of his/her contract. At this point the student is in jeopardy of being recommended for alternative placement or expulsion if improvement is not made.

Adjustment 2. Parents will be notified when the student remains on Level 2 for 5 consecutive weeks and is not satisfactorily performing to the terms of his/her contract. Parent conferences will be scheduled at NAS to discuss the student's progress. The parent will be advised that continued lack of effort and progress will result in the student being recommended for alternative interventions.

Adjustment 3. Parents will be notified when the student fails to progress to Level 3 after 11 weeks, or returns to Level 1 for 2 weeks, the student will be recommended to the administration for violation of his/her terms of contract. Alternative interventions and or expulsion may be recommended.

Special Provision (Director): Removal from a level due to discipline referrals can be done at the Director's discretion. A modified discipline plan that addresses the removal of a student from a specified level will be created. This discipline plan will address alternative interventions to expulsion.

Criteria for Daily Point System:

The AAA System will be used as a weekly incentive and for the accumulation of points. The week begins on Fridays and ends on the following Thursdays.

Teachers will in-put their AAA information by 3:00 p.m. Thursdays. Teachers will rate the students based on the AAA scale.

AAA Weekly Points Grid

Up to 10 points per week can be earned or lost, (3 to 4 points per AAA area). 30 points are awarded for the signing of acknowledgement of the receipt of the NAS Handbook and consent to the responsibilities as outlined.
