PreK and kindergarten registration continues through March 19. If you have a child that will be 4 or 5 by September 1, 2021, please register him/her using our online registration. You will need two proofs of residency and your child’s birth certificate. You can also upload your child’s immunization records. If you have any questions regarding Prek and kindergarten registration, please contact Dr. Beth Brooks or Ms. Jan Redden at 803-321-2600 or call your child’s zoned school.
As a reminder, the survey for the 21-22 school year will close on Monday, March 15 at 8 am. All parents are requested to complete one survey per child regarding your preference for your child’s instructional setting in a non-pandemic year. The survey can be found at https://bit.ly/3jHOw2t.
Pandemic EBT Benefits Information All households with potentially eligible students are strongly encouraged to validate their address in the DSS P-EBT Address Portal on or before March 19, 2021. The P-EBT Address Portal is located on the DSS website, at: https://benefitsportal.dss.sc.gov/#/pebt/addressverification . To locate a child in the Address Portal the parent must have: Student Last Name, Date of Birth, Student ID, School District and School Name. If a parent or guardian does not know the Student ID, they must obtain this information from the child’s school. Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) is an option the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food & Nutrition Service (FNS) has offered to states as an emergency program for the COVID-19 pandemic. The general premise behind the program is that with prolonged school closures, children are consuming meals at home that they otherwise would have had at school through national free or reduced-price meals under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, further straining families’ financial difficulties during this time. The primary difference between last year’s P-EBT and the current program (P-EBT 2.0) is that the first round was a one-time benefit based on the initial statewide school closures. For the 2020-21 school year, P-EBT 2.0 is a monthly benefit based on the number of days each child is attending school virtually. Children must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for P-EBT benefits for the 2020-21 school year: 1. Enrolled in a free and reduced-price school meals program or attending a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school. The attached listing of South Carolina public and private schools participating in the National School Lunch Program, including CEP schools, is available on the DSS website. 2. Attending a school experiencing pandemic-triggered closures or reduced attendance/hours. 3. Attending school virtually, either full-time or on a hybrid schedule. The benefit amount for each child is based on a daily rate of $6.82, multiplied by the number of days the student attends school virtually each month. South Carolina will issue P-EBT benefits retroactively and on a staggered issuance schedule. The initial round of P-EBT cards will be mailed out by April 16, 2021, to qualifying students who were eligible based on at least one day of virtual school attendance between September 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. If a student remains eligible through the end of the school year, additional P-EBT benefits will be loaded onto that same P-EBT card in April, May, and July 2021.
Prek and kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year opens on March 8. If you have a student that will be 4 or 5 by September 1, 2021 please register your student online using the 2021-2022 Pre-K & Kindergarten registration link found on our district web page. You will need three required documents – two proofs of residency and your child’s birth certificate. These documents can be uploaded online. Dial 4 testing will be required and your child’s zoned school will contact you for a scheduled time to take the test . If there are questions please call 803-321-2600 and ask for Dr. Beth Brooks or Ms. Jan Redden or contact your child’s zoned school.
In preparation for the 2021-2022 school year, all parents are asked to complete the following survey regarding instruction in a non-pandemic school year - https://bit.ly/3jHOw2t. Please complete one per child. Surveys must be completed before March 15.

USDA announced its waiver extension of the Seamless Summer Option, which allows schools to offer meals to all children at no charge through December 31, 2020 (dependent on available funding). What does this mean? Effective Tuesday, September 8, 2020, the School District of Newberry will offer all meals to all students at no cost. Elementary schools, which participate in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), already receive the benefit of meals at no cost and will not be impacted by the change. Middle and High Schools however will notice the difference as they will not be charged for meals (limited to one breakfast and one lunch per day). Middle & High school students participating in the Hybrid Module can pick up meals as they leave school each Monday or Tuesday. If students are participating in after school activities, parents may opt to pick up meals for their student on Wednesday of each week. Newberry One e-Learning students will also continue to pick up meals on Wednesday of each week. Offering meals at no cost will increase participation and it is asked that parents complete an on-line order form or call the schools café to pre-order meals for Wednesday pick up. Details can be found on the Nutrition Department web site at www.ncsdnutrition.com
All students, including virtual, need to have a valid SC Immunization Certificate on file. As the nurses audit records, if there is not a valid SC certificate on file, you will be notified and given 30 days to send a valid certificate to your child’s zoned school. If there is not one on file at that time, the student will not be allowed to attend school and access to Newberry One will be discontinued until one is provided. These absences will not be excused. DHEC’s Immunization Division is not considering extensions beyond the initial 30 day grace period as this should be enough time to obtain immunization records.

In an effort to assess internet capabilities within our district, we are asking that all parents complete the following survey by Tuesday, April 14. Internet is defined as ability to use a desktop, laptop, or tablet at home. For the purpose of this survey, access to internet solely through a smart phone is NOT considered internet access. Please complete a separate survey for each child who attends a school in Newberry County. Even if you previously completed a survey through your school, please take a moment to provide the information requested at https://bit.ly/SDNCInternetSurvey.

Governor Henry McMaster and South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman today released the following joint statement announcing that South Carolina’s schools will remain closed for the duration of the month of April: “At this time, students, parents, and families should plan for South Carolina’s schools to remain closed through the month of April. Our dedicated teachers and school administrators have done a tremendous job in making it possible for our students to learn at home. We understand that the prospect of schools remaining closed for an extended period of time places stress and strain on parents and children. Rest assured, if there is any way to safely open our schools earlier, we will do that, but schools must remain closed to protect the health and safety of South Carolinians.” https://governor.sc.gov/news/2020-03/joint-statement-gov-henry-mcmaster-sc-superintendent-education-molly-spearman

Our district continues to monitor the emerging novel coronavirus outbreak. We will work closely with our contacts at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) to stay informed of any developments of confirmed cases in the US and implement any recommendations or guidelines from the CDC or SC DHEC as they are determined. While this virus has not affected our area at present, DHEC and CDC have great resources available for parents and community members to learn about the virus, symptoms, preventative measures and current confirmed cases. As always, we encourage everyone to practice proper handwashing, cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and stay home if ill. It is all of us working together that will help decrease the spread of germs. To stay up to date on this ever-changing situation, go to: https://scdhec.gov/COVID19
