SDNC Delays Four Day Return to School for High School Students (Grades 9-12) The School District of Newberry County, out of an abundance of caution, will delay the return to four days of face to face instruction for high school students to Monday, February 1, 2021. This change only affects our students in grades 9-12. The district will remain on a hybrid (2 days of face to face instruction) schedule for high school students until February 1, 2021. Pk-Grade 8 students are not affected by this change and will remain on their present four day face to face instruction schedule. High school students who are changing their instructional setting (moving from virtual to face to face or hybrid to virtual) will make this instructional setting change on January 22, 2021, as originally scheduled. However, the students who are moving from virtual to face to face will do so on a hybrid schedule. Students will be contacted by their high school to inform them of their group assignment (Group 1 Monday/ Thursday or Group 2 Tuesday/Friday).
The School District of Newberry County will host its annual Recruitment Fair on Saturday, February 20 from 9 am - 11 am at Mid-Carolina High School. The School District of Newberry County will remain on schedule for resuming four days of face to face instruction. The following schedule outlines the dates students will return: January 5 – students in the Tuesday/Friday group will return to schools this day. January 6 – Virtual learning day for all students. January 7 – Grades PK-5 will begin four days of face to face instruction. (Grades 6-12 M/Th group will return on this date and students will remain in their two hybrid groups (M/Th or Tu/F) until their scheduled return date). January 14 – Grades 6-8 will begin four days of face to face instruction (Grades 9-12 will remain in their two hybrid groups until their scheduled return date). January 22 – Grades 9-12 will begin four days of face to face instruction. The four days of instruction will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wednesdays will remain a virtual day for all students. Students who are transitioning from Newberry ONE to face to face instruction will do so on their grade level’s designated date as listed above. Spectator Guidelines for Fall Sports Competitions In order to maintain safety protocols mandated by the South Carolina High School League, our schools will limit attendance and have requirements in place to attend events. Seating capacity will be limited for all venues during fall sports. Ticket distribution and sales will be facilitated by each individual school. • Due to COVID-19 restrictions and capacity limitations, Senior Citizens Gold Card Passes and School District Employee Passes will not be honored. • All spectators will be required to wear a face covering and adhere to social distancing at all games and contests. Entrance is not allowed without a face covering. • Areas of the bleachers will be marked off to allow for social distancing. • Spectators are not allowed on the field or court prior to or after games. • Spectators should remain in spectator seating areas or approved standing room only areas at all times unless visiting the concession stand or restrooms. All individuals must remain at least 6 feet apart when waiting in line. • If you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, are under quarantine for close contact, or exhibit signs of illness, you are asked to stay home.
USDA announced its waiver extension of the Seamless Summer Option, which allows schools to offer meals to all children at no charge through December 31, 2020 (dependent on available funding). What does this mean? Effective Tuesday, September 8, 2020, the School District of Newberry will offer all meals to all students at no cost. Elementary schools, which participate in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), already receive the benefit of meals at no cost and will not be impacted by the change. Middle and High Schools however will notice the difference as they will not be charged for meals (limited to one breakfast and one lunch per day). Middle & High school students participating in the Hybrid Module can pick up meals as they leave school each Monday or Tuesday. If students are participating in after school activities, parents may opt to pick up meals for their student on Wednesday of each week. Newberry One e-Learning students will also continue to pick up meals on Wednesday of each week. Offering meals at no cost will increase participation and it is asked that parents complete an on-line order form or call the schools café to pre-order meals for Wednesday pick up. All students, including virtual, need to have a valid SC Immunization Certificate on file. As the nurses audit records, if there is not a valid SC certificate on file, you will be notified and given 30 days to send a valid certificate to your child’s zoned school. If there is not one on file at that time, the student will not be allowed to attend school and access to Newberry One will be discontinued until one is provided. These absences will not be excused. DHEC’s Immunization Division is not considering extensions beyond the initial 30 day grace period as this should be enough time to obtain immunization records.

In observance of Memorial Day, Free Meal Service pick ups will occur on Tuesday, May 26, rather than Monday, May 25. Also, Tuesday, May 26 will be the last date for the mobile bus meal service sites. Meals will continue to be offered every Monday during the month of June at Mid-Carolina High School, Newberry High School, Whitmire Community School, Newberry Middle School, Pomaria-Garmany Elementary School and Reuben Elementary School.
The School District of Newberry County has established graduation dates and times for the Class of 2020. Whitmire Community School will have graduation on June 2 at 7 pm in the school gymnasium. Newberry High School will have graduation on June 3 at 9 am at Mike Ware Field. Mid-Carolina High School will have graduation on June 4 at 9 am at Lon Armstrong Stadium. All graduates will be limited to 2 tickets each. Social distancing guidelines will be adhered to at all graduations. A commemorative DVD will be provided for all graduates and will also be posted to the district’s YouTube channel. School specific procedures will be shared with the graduates and their families. We thank all of you for your patience as we work to make this a special time for our graduates.

Assignment pick-ups will be available at your child’s school Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17 and 18 between 8am – 4 pm. If the times available do not work for you to pick up assignments, please contact your child’s school. Each school will be posting a link requesting information from parents regarding Internet access. Please complete the survey posted on the school website and social media account to give us important information regarding your Internet access. If you are experiencing any symptoms of the virus, including fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please do not come to the school to pick up assignment packets; please contact your primary care provider. With the Governor’s proclamation for closing schools, the School District of Newberry County will not have school through March 31. Students and families are asked to continue to practice good hygiene by washing hands and also maintain social distancing by staying six feet away from others. We will be sending out information about meals being provided to students, including locations to pick up breakfast and lunch in the near future. Our district continues to monitor the emerging novel coronavirus outbreak. We will work closely with our contacts at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) to stay informed of any developments of confirmed cases in the US and implement any recommendations or guidelines from the CDC or SC DHEC as they are determined. Due to the threat of winter weather and hazardous road conditions, all after school activities for the Newberry County School District have been canceled for Thursday, February 20. Canceled activities include all athletic games and practices, Boys and Girls Club after school care, meetings, programs, adult education classes, and all other activities and events. The District will also operate on a two-hour delayed schedule for Friday, February 21. Buses will run two hours later than the regular route time with schools and offices beginning two hours later than usual.
School District of Newberry County Intra-District Transfer Applications for the 2020-2021 school year can be completed at the Student Services Office located in the District Office at 3419 Main Street (next to Newberry County Career Center) beginning March 2 – April 30, 2020 between the hours 8 am – 4:00 pm. All transfer requests will be completed on-site. This is approximately a ten (10) minute process. Deadline for accepting transfer requests will be April 30, 2020.

Due to the possibility of hazardous road conditions, all Newberry County Schools and Offices will operate on a two-hour delayed schedule for Friday, February 7. Buses will run two hours later than the regular route time with schools and offices beginning two hours later than usual. Pre-kindergarten classes which meet only in the morning will not be held.
Due to the threat of severe weather, Newberry County School District will dismiss schools at 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 6. Buses will begin running from the schools at 2:00. Car rider pick up and student driver dismissal will also begin at 2:00. As a reminder, all afternoon activities have been cancelled.

The Mid-Carolina Middle School Academic Team was recognized for being named the 2019 S.C. State Academic Team Champions for the second year in a row. Additional information on this topic can be found in the News Section of the District Page.
The following students from the Newberry County Career Center were recognized for participating in the SkillsUSA Competition: Jonathan Tiahuechti-Huetra, Jesus Ramirez, Andrew Boland, Noah Longshore, Joseph Murray and Nicolette Still.
The School District of Newberry County Board recognized Mid-Carolina Middle School students Jack Gantt and Matthew Moyd for earning third place in Density Lab at the S.C. Science Olympiad.
Mid-Carolina Middle School Principal Deedee Westwood was recognized for being elected to the S.C. Beta Club Council.
Mid-Carolina High School’s Hailey Roach was recognized by the Board for qualifying for All-State Chorus.
Local high school students Matthew Epting, Andy Lin and Shield Sawyer were recognized by City Council for being recipients of this year’s Newberry-PMPA Community Scholar Scholarship.
The Mid-Carolina High School JROTC Color Guards participated in the Memorial Day Ceremony held in Newberry on Sunday, May 26th
Congratulations to Will Garner! Will was selected and played in the Boys State Tennis Singles Tournament, May 13-14. He played against the best in the state in this high level tournament and competed well. We are very proud of Will’s accomplishments! Way to go Will!
